Former English FA chief Brian Barwick admits they held talks with Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho before giving the England job to Fabio Capello.
The Chelsea icon was under consideration for the job following Steve McClaren's departure.
"We spoke to him on the phone several times to see if he was interested," Barwick told the Sunday Express. "We wouldn't have been doing our job if we hadn't. But it was Fabio (Capello) who came through from beginning to end as actually wanting the job. He was keen to do it."
