England U21s hammer Scotland youngsters 6-0

Roy Hodgson guided the England U21 team to a 6-0 thrashing of Scotland's U21s at Bramall Lane on Tuesday.

The England senior boss took the reins of the Young Lions for the midweek friendly in Sheffield and the end result was something that will boost the morale of the players who performed so poorly at this summer's European U21 Championships in Israel.

Norwich City recruit Nathan Redmond opened the scoring in the third minute before Liverpool's Raheem Sterling added a second seven minutes before the break.

Towering Sunderland forward Connor Wickham made it 3-0 five minutes into the second half with a deft lob prior to Everton midfielder Ross Barkley adding a fourth five minutes later.

Soon enough it was 5-0 when Swansea City's Jonjo Shelvey curled home a lovely effort before a sixth was added by Tottenham's Tom Carroll just after the hour-mark.

England will next take on Moldova in their first 2015 European U21 Championship Group 1 qualifier at Reading's Madejski Stadium on September 5.

For Scotland, Billy Stark's men will continue their Group 3 campaign away to the Netherlands.
