England U21 sweating on fitness of Man City's Onuoha

England U21 boss Stuart Pearce is desperate for Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha for their next Euros game against Spain.

Pearce has Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne suspended after being sent off in the victory over Finland, while Micah Richards limped off with a jarred knee after scoring the winner in Halmstad.

Richards hopes to be fit but England's physios have still been in touch with Manchester City to discuss how best to deal with the injury.

Onuoha, who has been carrying a thigh problem, has trained with the players who did not feature against Finland.

"We wrapped him in cotton wool for the Finland game and didn't feel he was fully fit to contribute in the match," Pearce said.

James Milner also picked up a slight thigh complaint but he is also confident of playing against the Spaniards.

"We'll let the conditioning coach, the physios and the doctor work hard with these players," Pearce said. "Fingers crossed the majority of the slight niggles will not be too bad."
