England U21 boss Southgate insists no bad blood with Man Utd over Shaw

Gareth Southgate has made it clear that Manchester United played no active role in Luke Shaw's omission from England U21 squad.

The 19-year old left-back was left out of the Young Lions squad for the UEFA European U21 Championships this summer after being concussed against Crystal Palace last weekend.

There were reports that suggested United boss Louis van Gaal had placed pressure on Southgate not to select Shaw as he wanted to rest him over the summer but Southgate indicated nothing of the like had occurred.

"Luke hasn't been told to withdraw from the squad,'' Southgate said.

"What van Gaal said hasn't inflamed the situation from our point of view.

"I have dealt with Luke the whole season and I know the player and the medical team are in constant contact.''
