England's Hodgson: Man Utd's Rooney is an 'outstanding player'

England boss Roy Hodgson has heaped praise on Wayne Rooney following his recent run of form.

The Manchester United star has been in full flight at club level in both the Premier League and Champions League, scoring five goals in his last seven outings and having a hand in a number of other goals for the Red Devils.

His return to top form has England fans salivating ahead of next year's World Cup and manager Hodgson is also enamoured with his recent work.

"He is playing fantastic. He's an outstanding player," he told Sky Sports News.

"I just wish I could turn the clock forward and keep him in this form, maybe bottle up what he is doing at the moment, and keep it on a shelf somewhere and release it in May and June.

"I have got to hope Wayne can keep up that good form and we see exactly the same in June as we are seeing at the moment - if we do we have got one major tool in our box."
