England romp to five goal win

A trio of headers contributed to England's 5-1 victory over Kazakhstan at Wembley. A scoreless first half saw the England team leave the pitch to a mild chorus of boos such had been their disappointing performance.

Theo Walcott posed an early threat which quickly disappeared as England's final ball went awry.

Frank Lampard and Emile Heskey had the only decent chances of the half as Kazakhstan showed signs of exploiting nervousness in the middle of the England defence.

The Three Lions got the eventual breakthrough just after the break with Rio Ferdinand heading Lampard's corner powerfully home.

The visitor's hit back and Nusserbayev twice had opportunities to embarrass England.

The game seemed safe when Kuchma headed an own goal from Lampard's free kick but a dreadful mistake from Ashley Cole presented Kukeyev with the opportunity to pull one back and suddenly England looked vulnerable.

Wayne Rooney restored the two goal cushion with a glancing header and with the visitor's looking tired Rooney again struck followed by substitute Jermaine Defoe to give a slightly deceptive final score.

Opening scorer Ferdinand told ITV1 that the first goal was crucial.

"The first goal was always going to be important after we had a couple of half chances in the first half.

"We kept plugging away second half and created the openings and I was lucky to get on the scoresheet as well.

"The result was the most important thing even though we would like to play better. But saying that we won 5-1 and it's three points.

The Manchester United defender was also critical of the fans reaction to Cole's mistake.

"It was disappointing the booing. When a player makes a mistake you want to get behind him and give him his confidence back.

"It doesn't help when the fans are booing your own players and I hope those that did are feeling ashamed of themselves now."
