England to name Man Utd ace Rooney as new captain

Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney is set to be confirmed England captain.

The Daily Express says Rooney will be named next Thursday at Wembley as Roy Hodgson's choice to replace Steven Gerrard as skipper.

The FA hope the publicity which Rooney's appointment will attract will help boost the poor ticket sales for the friendly at home against Norway on September 3 and help restore backing for the side for the forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers, which begin in Switzerland on September 8.

By last night, 15,000 seats had been sold for the Norwegian friendly - England's first match since they departed Brazil without getting out of the first stage, finishing bottom of their group.

There could potentially be a further 17,000 Club Wembley members at the game although the FA are unsure how many will attend.

The announcement of Hodgson's squad next Thursday - and the confirmation of Rooney as captain - could provide a further sales boost.
