England midfield role for Man Utd star Rooney did not quite work – Smith

Arsenal legend Alan Smith believes that Wayne Rooney failed to impress in midfield against Slovakia.

Rooney lined up in a midfield role alongside the likes of Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier in England's World Cup qualifier against Slovakia on Sunday and it has been widely suggested that the Three Lions' skipper did not perform to his best during the encounter.

Former England striker Smith was not left impressed with Rooney's performance and has suggested that manager Sam Allardyce would be better off deploying the striker in a more advanced role in future fixtures.

Smith told Sky Sports: "I thought he might play in the number 10 position, as most people did, but he was really quite deep - dropping off in front of the back four and trying to ping balls right and left.

"I don't think it really worked. When Dele Alli came on into that advanced number 10 he made a real difference so maybe that's something for Sam Allardyce to think about."
