England legend Peter Shilton has taken aim at Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard after back-to-back World Cup defeats.
Shilton wrote in the Daily Star Sunday: "I always thought he wasn't a natural defensive midfielder and that has been proven to be the case on the biggest stage.
"I'm not blaming him for either of the defeats as he has been a terrific player for England and I have the utmost respect for him - but he has made key mistakes that have cost us.
"For Uruguay's first goal he lost his man and really should have made the tackle, while Phil Jagielka lost Luis Suarez in the box, who peeled away to the far post.
"For the second goal, Stevie mistimed his header and Suarez saw it coming.
"Gerrard's passing is usually one of his strengths but that has not been there, either.
"I don't know whether Roy will stay loyal to his captain but we have to have one eye on the future.
"I'm not sure what Gerrard's plans are after the World Cup and whether he will carry on to 2016 or not - but he hasn't got that many miles left on the clock."
