England grateful to Gerrard for friendly win

The boos may not have materialised as expected but they certainly would have had Steven Gerrard not scored twice in four second half minutes to give England a 2-1 win over Hungary. England's rehabilitation after the World Cup may still have some way to go but there were signs against Hungary that youth coupled with experience may just be the way forward.

Admittedly the opposition was at the gentler end of the scale but the Three Lions showed more intent and invention in the first half than had been seen in four games of the World Cup.

True Fabio Capello's team lost their way for a while but Gerrard was on hand to save the day after Hungary took a shock lead just after the hour.

A Michael Dawson error allows a cross from the left to deflect off Phil Jagielka, and despite the Tottenham defender seemingly hooking the ball clear the linesman signalled the ball had crossed the line. Television replays were far from conclusive.

Ten minutes later and England are level as Gerrard bursts forward and lashes a dipping shot past a startled Kiraly.

Four minutes later and the comeback is complete as Gerrard shows class to spin in the penalty area and poke the ball home.

There was still time for Joe Hart to block a last minute effort as England were exposed at the back.

Capello made four substitutions at half time, including three debutants. Michael Dawson, Kieran Gibbs, Ashley Young and Bobby Zamora came on, Theo Walcott, Frank Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole went off.
