England to fast-track Sunderland youngster Henderson into senior squad

Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson is set to be fast-tracked into England's senior squad.

The Journal says Henderson was watched by Fabio Capello's right-hand man Franco Baldini on several occasions last term, most recently in the 1-0 reverse against Manchester United at the end of May.

Many assumed Baldini was checking on the form of Darren Bent ahead of the World Cup, but sources close to the England set-up say it was the 20-year-old midfielder who was being monitored closely on that day.

Henderson's maturity, terrific work-rate and temperament have been noted by the coaching set-up and he has been capped by England at both under-19 and under-20 level.

Although the next step would be an under-21 call-up, Capello has him on a list of 20 players who can replace the discredited, so-called 'Golden Generation' immediately.
