England Euro flops can expect a hard time - Arsenal midfielder Wilshere

Jack Wilshere says he and his England colleagues have only themselves to blame following the Euro2016 disaster.

The Three Lions performed well below expectations in France, eventually succumbing to minnows Iceland in the Round of 16, which prompted heavy criticism from all corners of the United Kingdom.

Looking back at the team's shortcomings, Arsenal midfielder Wilshere admits the critics and fans alike have a right to be frustrated after a talented group of players failed so miserably on the continental stage.

"I think we can expect a hard time because we know that we were not good enough," he said.

"We know that we didn't reach the heights that the country expected us to meet. We didn't perform.

"And for us, the main thing is to look at ourselves. We as players know that we were not good enough. Of course we let the fans down.

"We know that England fans are passionate, and they are going to show their frustration towards us.

"But I think it's important for us as players for the national team now to focus on working for the new manager, focus on what he wants us to do as a team.

"I have been in this position before with England. OK, I didn't really play in the World Cup in Rio, but I was involved in it and the country was maybe in a worse position. We didn't get out of the group and there were a lot of doubters.

"But then we responded quite well, even if it was only qualifying."
