England would deliver a sustainable FIFA World Cup if the country earned the right to host the tournament in 2018, an official FA statement has declared. That message was delivered by England 2018 Vice-President, Lord Nicholas Stern as the pivotal 192-nation climate change conference opened in Copenhagen.
Lord Stern, a world-renowned climate change economist, is leading the team that is producing the sustainability element of England's bid submission to FIFA. He said: "The Copenhagen summit is a crucial moment in history, and more than ever we need strong leadership and collaboration to achieve a global deal. Major events like the FIFA World Cup present an important opportunity to communicate and demonstrate what can be done to combat climate change and achieve a sustainable future.
Lord Stern, added: "If we are awarded the honour of hosting the event, England 2018 is committed to delivering a sustainable FIFA World Cup. This will be a crucial part of a World Cup in which the future of the world's young people is absolutely central."
In delivering a spectacular FIFA World Cup, England 2018 would take all possible measures to reduce negative impacts and showcase innovative ways of enhancing event sustainability by building on FIFA's Green Goal programme.
The team is currently preparing the detailed technical bid, which will be presented to FIFA in May 2010.
