England desperate to stop Arsenal young gun Iwobi committing to Nigeria

The English Football Association are reportedly attempting to convince Arsenal starlet Alex Iwobi not to make his full international debut for Nigeria and commit his future to the Three Lions instead.

The 19-year-old has begun to establish himself in Arsenal's first team in recent weeks, having started in three of their last four fixtures.

Iwobi scored a goal and delivered a Man of the Match performance in his first Premier League start in the 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

Despite representing England at U16, U17 and U18 level, Iwobi has played in two friendly matches for the Nigerian national team.

However, Iwobi will not become tied to the nation of his birth unless he plays for Nigeria in a competitive fixture, such as the Super Eagles' Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Egypt this week.

The Daily Mirror is reporting FA officials have contacted Iwobi, who is the nephew of former Premier League star Jay Jay Okocha, in order to make a last ditch effort to convince the young star to pledge his allegiance to England.

It is understood the powers that be at the FA see Iwobi as a future England international and will be devastated to lose him to Nigeria.
