England cricket star Chris Woakes is backing his beloved Aston Villa for a big season ahead.

The Warwickshire ace is impressed by manager Paul Lambert's early work in the summer market.

"I'm hoping this year will be a bit better," he told the Sunday Mercury. "Last year was a nervy one. It was tough because I was getting stick from all ends of the dressing room.

"They've dipped into their pockets a bit and brought in some new players so hopefully that can bolster the squad.

"If we give Lambert some time we will be okay I think.

"It's a tough league to stay in these days, the Premier League.

"There's not just the top six anymore, it's almost the top ten that you've got to break into.

"It's going to be tough but I'm hoping for a better year."
