England coach Roy Hodgson is happy to have included Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick in his squad for tonight's friendly against Italy.
Carrick rejected Euros selection this summer over concerns of being only a squad player.
Hodgson said on Tuesday night: "I prefer to leave the past where it is. I know Michael is a good player. I know he can be useful in an England set-up.
"We could have used him in the summer. A lot of pressure was put on our two central midfielders because Gareth Barry, Michael and Frank Lampard weren't there."
Hodgson added: "He was at pains to point out to me that he's here unconditionally. He doesn't seem to be that kind of player who demands to play or not. He doesn't demand to play at Manchester United, does he?"
