England coach Hodgson backing Man Utd's Rooney to surpass Shilton record

England coach Roy Hodgson can see Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney breaking all Three Lions records.

Rooney is already on 84 caps at age 27, and Hodgson has no doubt that he not only has time to make more appearances for the Three Lions than Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, but could even overtake Peter Shilton's record of 125.

England boss Hodgson also believes Rooney will step up against Montenegro on Friday, and take the responsibility on his shoulders to ensure they qualify.

Hodgson said: "He's a wonderful player - 84 caps already.

"If he was to have as long a career as Steven or Frank, he could go through the roof when it comes to caps.

"His performances for Manchester United in recent weeks have been first-class, playing well with and without the ball.

"I would want to concur that he's a very important player who will be taking a lot of responsibility tomorrow, like Steven (Gerrard).

"You depend upon your senior players, those who have been there and born that responsibility.

"You rely on them - we'll be relying on Wayne tomorrow."
