England captain Rooney sends condolences to France - ‘It’s a sad time’

Wayne Rooney has spoken solemnly about the tragic events that occurred in Paris on Friday.

129 people were killed in the French capital in a terrorist attack that has rocked the world but football will give people a chance to unite when the French team takes on England at Wembley in a friendly on Wednesday.

Ahead of that match, Three Lions captain Rooney believes that although it is a very difficult time, this particular fixture provides a great opportunity to try and forget about the horrible situation.

Rooney also touched on the subject of the France v Germany match which was being played at the nearby Stade de France when the attacks occurred.

"I think first of all, on behalf of the players, we would like to give our condolences.

"Having team-mates in my own club, I spoke to them after it happened, and it's a hard time for everyone. We have to be respectful.

"Then there is a football match. It will be tough for the French players, but it is a time for them to make their country proud, and they will do everything they can to make their country proud.

"I think first of all, when I saw the images, it's sickening. It's a sad time."

The Manchester United star added: "I think football globally does a lot for the world. It shows everyone as a unit.

"Football has the power to do that and I think the world of football needs to stay strong together. I'm sure football will help bring everyone together."
