England captain Gerrard, manager Hodgson preferred Messi over Ronaldo

England skipper Steven Gerrard and manager Roy Hodgson both voted for Lionel Messi to win the 2012 FIFA Ballon d'Or.

Football's governing body has released the complete list of every international captain and coach and how they voted for the world footballer of the year award.

Liverpool midfielder Gerrard had Barcelona and Argentina star Messi, who took out his fourth straight Ballon d'Or, as his top pick ahead of Real Madrid and Portugal ace Cristiano Ronaldo and Spanish midfielder Andres Iniesta.

Three Lions boss Hodgson joined Gerrard in selecting Messi and Ronaldo at one and two respectively but threw in Atletico Madrid and Colombia attacker Radamel Falcao at three.
