England boss urges realistic expectations for Everton young gun Barkley

England manager Roy Hodgson is hoping the general public do not immediately place lofty expectations on youngster Ross Barkley.

The 20-year old Everton midfielder has been named in Hodgson's 23-man provisional squad for this summer's World Cup in Brazil but the Three Lions boss is remaining realistic about what the starlet will produce after making just three international appearances so far.

"Ross is a very exciting talent and if he can continue at that level then he has a fantastic future in front of him," Hodgson said.

"But I would hope people are realistic in their expectations of him. I wouldn't want to put on him the kind of pressure that says he has to score goals like he did against Manchester City, or run 40 yards and beat lots of players - that's unrealistic.

"But I'll be surprised if the opposition coaches of the teams in our group aren't saying to their players: 'This England team is a very good one, with very good players, and you can definitely lose to them'."
