England boss Hodgson urges halt on IRA songs ahead of Ireland friendly

England manager Roy Hodgson has implored supporters to opt away from singing political songs for the summer's meeting with Republic of Ireland.

The Three Lions take on the Irish in Dublin in June in the first match between the nations since crowd trouble forced a premature close during the first half two decades ago.

Ahead of the fixture, in just over two months' time, Hodgson hopes England fans do not get embroiled in anti-IRA behavior so the game can go ahead with no trouble.

"I'm very keen that we get the support that we get. I love the fact that our fans come (to matches) and there's no way I can justify or be glad about any political chants of that nature," he said.

"We can only hope that in some way we can put that right before we go to Ireland because the last thing we want in Ireland is anything other than a very good football match which again puts us to the test, like the Italy game (on Tuesday) has done."
