An ankle injury has ruled Chelsea's Ashley Cole out of England's opening World Cup qualifier against Moldova on Friday. The 31-year-old will be reassessed on Sunday to determine whether he would be fit for next Tuesday's home game against Ukraine.
The injury has ended Cole's hopes of becoming the first full-back to win 100 caps during this month's double-header.
He will return to Stamford Bridge for treatment this week before linking up again with his international team-mates.
