Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood says signing Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori on a season-long loan was a no brainer for his club.

Villa have the option of signing the Portuguese international to a permanent deal for between £6million and £9million at the conclusion of the loan spell and Sherwood is confident the 22-year-old will be a good piece of business for his club.

"I would never have taken him if it was just a loan. I have no interest in developing players for other clubs," Sherwood said.

"But with the opportunity to sign him at the end of it was too good to turn down. I was surprised we had an opportunity to take him.

"It is a no brainer for us. We can take him on trial for a year to see if he can be that player I think he can.

"It is a great deal for this football club because we have the option to buy.

"He's very versatile, has good pace, good elegance, 6ft 3in, and is in a mould of an Emre Can in my opinion."
