Egypt cruise past Australia in Cairo

African champions Egypt have brushed aside Australia, winning 3-0 in Cairo this morning. The Egyptians were a class above Holger Osieck's Socceroos who produced their worst performance since going down to Germany in the opening group stage of the World Cup.

The home side went ahead just before the hour-mark when Ahmed Abdul Zaher poked home and their lead was doubled about a half-hour later when substitute Gedo netted after a good move involving Sunderland defender Ahmed Al Muhammadi.

Australia held off Egypt's advances as much as they could but a third goal was imminent and it came in controversial circumstances when Socceroos skipper Lucas Neill was adjudged to have fouled Gedo in the area and the referee pointed to the spot.

Borussia Dortmund's Mohamed Zidan stepped up and converted past Schwarzer to make it 3-0 and leave the visitors asking questions.
