EFL CUP QF: Courageous Hull fight back to beat Newcastle

Hull City are into the semi-finals of the EFL Cup for the first time in the club's history.

Mike Phelan's Tigers showed courage and character at the KCOM Stadium to edge past Championship leaders Newcastle United by virtue of a 3-1 penalty shootout win after it finished 1-1 at the end of 120 minutes.

The home side were reduced to 10 men in the 88th minute when striker Dieumerci Mbokani forced his head towards Jamaal Lascelles when the pair confronted each other after the defender had gone through the back of the DR Congo man.

It could have been a major turning point in proceedings but the Tigers were able to hold strong until the ninth minute of extra-time, when former Tigers star Mo Diame, who scored in the play-off final last season, toe-poked home Dwight Gayle's flick-on from a corner to put the Magpies ahead.

Diame did not celebrate at all as a mark of respect to his former club.

However, the lead lasted only seconds as Hull responded swiftly through Robert Snodgrass who was on hand to fire home the rebound after Matz Sels had kept out Markus Henriksen's initial effort.

Those goals forced the match into a shootout after 30 minutes of extra-time and it was Hull who came out on top, winning 3-1, and with goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic to thank.

The Swiss gloveman denied Jonjo Shelvey's opening attempt before Snodgrass fired home emphatically for Hull.

Leading Newcastle scorer Gayle then hit the top of the crossbar prior to Michael Dawson's conversion for the Tigers.

Christian Atus, on loan from Chelsea, made no mistake for the Toon, Tom Huddlestone squeezed home for Hull and then Jakupovic came up with another save, thwarting Yoan Gouffran to send the Humberside outfit into the final four.

It was a disappointing end for Rafa Benitez's side who looked well-placed to nick a spot in the semi-finals of the league cup after Diame's goal, only to have it stolen away from them by the Premier League strugglers.

Hull join eight-time winners Liverpool in the semi-finals with the remaining two spots up for grabs when Manchester United and West Ham United meet at Old Trafford tomorrow night, when Arsenal host Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.
