Edvard Sandvik Tagseth: Why Liverpool beat Everton, Man Utd to Norwegian superkid

Edvard Sandvik Tagseth. They all wanted him. Manchester United. Manchester City. Ajax. They were all in touch.

In the end, Eddy chose Liverpool, which was a bit rough on Merseyside rivals, Everton.

It was the Blues which first brought the 14 year-old Norwegian to England in January. Eddy, having been spotted by Everton scouts playing for local team, FK Neset, trained with the Blues academy and was offered the chance of a game.

Eddy didn't disappoint, starring - and scoring - in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United. It would be the Premier League giants who next put in a call to Eddy's father, Tore, about a trial.

A return to Everton later in the year also included a five-day training stint at United. Then it was Manchester City's turn, which offered the teen trials in March.

Eddy and Tore were flattered, with City's academy directors revealing they'd made scouting trips to see him play on three different occasions in 2014. City had also made contact with Stein Aursand, FK Neset's chairman, after Eddy's initial visit to Everton.

A six-day test was held with City - and again Eddy impressed. But, at that time, Everton remained in the boxseat.

Then came Liverpool. And from his first day training with the Reds academy, all bets were off. There was only ever going to be one winner in this race.

The Tagseths are a Reds family. Eddy has been Liverpool mad all his young life. The offer of trials in May was a real dream come true for the 14 year-old.

And making it all the more perfect was Liverpool including him in their junior squad for a tournament in Bulgaria. To pull on the Reds shirt in competitive action was just the gesture needed to convince Eddy where his professional career should be launched.

"It was wonderful," Eddy recalled. "I've dreamed of playing for my favorite club, Liverpool, for many years. So to get the chance in Bulgaria was very exciting.

"Yes, I scored against CSKA Sofia. We lost the game 4-2, but I scored one of our goals with a half-volley from the tip of the 16-yard box. A nice experience."

Former Liverpool boss Phil Thompson had a good look at their future signing when the club's international academy faced Eddy and a Norway select XI earlier this year. Eddy stood out in Norway's 8-2 triumph.

"He is a very talented 14-year-old. A perfect player to have on a team. I've heard about him before, but never seen him play," said Thompson.

"What I saw was a player who is very diligent, who has great understanding of the game, and with a unique look and flair."

Eddy signed a pre-contract with Liverpool last month, where he will move when he turns 16 in 18 months time. For now, the midfielder will stay with FK Neset, but will visit Liverpool's academy once a month for specialist training.

Working with the Tagseth family is former Celtic and Rosenborg defender Vidar Riseth, who also grew up in Frosta, Eddy's home town.

"He is only 14 years old, so this I think is a very good solution. He gets reassurance of playing with his team, but also enough of a challenge to continue developing. It's perfect," said Riseth.

"He must continue to train with those who are older than himself, work out with his buddies and especially retain as much of the ball as he does today, especially inside the garage!"

That garage Riseth refers to is at the family home where Tore has laid an artificial pitch for Eddy to train on. He even installed bullet proof windows to stop Eddy smashing everything in sight with his shooting!

Riseth adds: "More people should have their share of the credit for where Edvard was to where he is today, among others Neset coach Roger Lein, but I would argue that Tore and the garage is probably the most important thing."

Lein is a legend in Frosta for his unique approach to coaching, but actually credits Eddy and his enthusiasm towards the game for keeping football alive in the village.

"It's a dream for a coach to have a player like Edvard," says Lein.

"There's no room for anyone with a star ego in a little village like Frosta. Instead, he is a major reason why 11 of the total of 13 of all 14-year olds at Frosta play football."

Everton's academy staff will be disappointed, given all their ground work. But as Tore says, as soon as Liverpool made contact, Eddy's mind was made up.

"I think Liverpool have the better academy. Everton dealt with us very well. But Liverpool were quicker and more specific with their offer.

"Plus, it's the Reds that are his club. It's what he's wanted."
