Durham Uni student Shekoni wins extraordinary Sunderland chance

Durham University student Afolabi Shekoni is trialling with Sunderland.

Shekoni spent the end of last season turning out for Horden Colliery Welfare but on Tuesday he lined up alongside Graham Kavanagh, Stephen Wright and Tobias Hysen for the Black Cats' second string. Shekoni made an instant impression, opening the scoring in a 3-2 win over Scottish League Division Two Berwick Rangers and having a hand in two other goals.

The sports science student, who describes himself as being in his "early 20s", came across Roy Keane in Durham last season and cheekily asked the Irishman for a trial.

Keane took his details but no phone call was forthcoming. Then, when Shekoni saw him again in the city he reminded the manager of their meeting. This time when Keane took his details his secretary got back in touch.

"I was really surprised when he said yes because you don't really get chances like that," admitted Nigerian Shekoni to The Journal.

"You tend to have to go through the whole long process of scouts coming to watch you and so on. But nothing's happened yet. It could all end tomorrow."
