Pierre van Hooijdonk has revealed that Dundee United trialist Nadir Ciftci missed out on a cap for Turkey because of a clerical error.
The 21-year old Dutch-born winger pledged his allegiance to Turkey whilst he was with Portsmouth back in 2011 but was unable to win his debut cap for the country because his passport was sent to the wrong spot.
Former Celtic star van Hooijdonk, who was Guus Hiddink's assistant for Turkey at that stage, suggests United boss Jackie McNamara will be getting to look closely at a very capable player.
"Nadir was going to make his debut for Turkey, against Holland funnily enough," van Hooidjonk said of the former Kayserispor and NAC Breda attacker.
"But it fell through because he was playing for Portsmouth at the time and they sent his passport to London instead of Holland.
"He missed the game and never got the cap.
"But Nadir is still a very good player. He's quick, has good skill and can score goals.
"I mentioned him to Jackie and he'll have a look at him.
"He could survive in Scottish football. A lot of Dutch players couldn't because they're not strong enough, but he will."
