Dundee Utd’s McNamara: Ciftci takes a bit of managing

Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara admits managing Nadir Ciftci is sometimes a thankless task.

The supremely talented Turkish forward, who scored in the weekend’s 3-1 Scottish Cup semi-final win over Rangers, often gets caught up with trying to do the tricky things on a football pitch rather than keeping it simple.

McNamara is well aware of this as he sees it every week but admits he tries to see past Ciftci’s eccentricities and allow him to play his natural game.

“He maybe doesn’t see it as showboating. That’s the difference. I accept certain things with him as he’s a very gifted player, a one-off,” McNamara said.

“He takes a bit of managing, believe me, but when he’s on it, he’s worth it – that’s the beauty of players who are special.

“He’s here because of little things. If he didn’t have some of these traits, he wouldn’t be playing in our league.”
