The 21-year old was given the run around by Jelavic when the Tangerines were beaten 3-1 by Rangers back in November with the Croatian netting an early double.
Ahead of tonight’s Tannadice friendly with Everton, for whom Jelavic now plays, ex-Blackburn Rovers youngster Gunning is hoping he can show the football community that he has improved from that poor performance last time he came face to face with the Toffees ace.
“Jelavic is a top international striker and I know that for sure,” Gunning said.
“When I played against him at Ibrox, he scored a couple of headers and was a real stand-out.
“It was a big learning experience for me – his movement and strength were phenomenal.
“You could also see that by the way he held his own at Euro 2012. He’s up there with the best.
“He’s done very well since going to the Premiership by scoring some great goals.
“Although it wasn’t very pleasant at the time, that day at Ibrox has stood me in good stead and it would obviously be a big challenge to face him again at Tannadice.”
