Newcastle United dropped their interest in Sevilla wing-back Ivica Dragutinovic after the Serb hiked up his wage demands.

A United source told the Evening Chronicle: "We were a bit taken back by Dragutinovic's demands.

"If we had given him what he was asking for, it would have made him the highest paid player at St James' Park.

"We are not prepared to meet his demands."
