Former Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing knows he arrives at Liverpool without a guaranteed first team start.
The 27-year-old knows that, regardless of his fee, Kenny Dalglish will have no problem leaving him on the sidelines if he does not deliver the goods.
Downing insisted: "I don't think the fact Liverpool have paid the money for me will mean anything to Kenny.
"If you don't perform, you won't be in the team regardless of whether you cost £20m or not.
"As a manager you want different options, there will be injuries and suspensions - Stevie Gerrard is injured, will Luis Suarez start the season?
"I know I have to work hard and signing for Liverpool is just the start, not the end. But I am ready to fight and repay people's faith."
