Downing expects quality signings at Middlesbrough

Stewart Downing has revealed that Middlesbrough are in the process of bringing some quality players to the club.

England international Downing made the move back to the Riverside Stadium when signing a four-year deal with the Championship club from West Ham United for a fee of £5.5million earlier this month.

Downing has revealed his reasons for making the move while suggesting that Boro chairman Steve Gibson has plans in place to bring some key signings to Teesside.

For me it was a good time to come back. I had a good offer from Middlesbrough, so the security of the contract was good, but the pull was my hometown club.

"It was also the plans the chairman has and players he was bringing in," Downing told Sky Sports News HQ.

"I can't tell you who they are but they are good players.

"I think there's a really good chance of promotion and I'd like to be part of it.

"The facilities are first class, which should be a pull for any player."

It is believed that Blackburn Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes is one of the names Boro are eyeing closely but the Scotland international comes with a £12million price tag.
