Donovan to move into midfield as LA Galaxy target successful 2014

Landon Donovan admits he could spend more time as a midfielder for the LA Galaxy this season.

The USA international played 45 minutes of the clubs 2-1 pre-season win over FC Shirak on the weekend with new recruit Samuel (on loan from Fluminense) and youngster Gyasi Zardes on the scoresheet.

Donovan did not play in his customary advanced role as he steps aside for strike signings in the off-season but insists his days as a forward are certainly not over.

"I can play wherever I'm needed. But it would be nice to have some other guys take some pressure off. Those guys seem eager and hungry to make an impact," said Donovan who operated on the left flank.

"I think when you look at some of the qualities we have on our team you would expect that I would play at midfield to some extent. But if there's times in the year I play forward that's fine too."

And Donovan was hoping that the Galaxy squad had enough quality to return to the top of MLS following their 2011 and 2012 title wins.

"A lot of our young guys are progressing, so more than ever I think there's going to be a lot of competition," added Donovan. "We have fewer games, which helps. We have no excuses why we can't do well this year."
