Sunderland have signed veteran midfielder Steven Pienaar on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The South African was a free agent after leaving Everton at the end of last season, having made almost 200 appearances for the Toffees over two spells.

Pienaar will be reunited with David Moyes, the manager who brought him to England in 2007 from Borussia Dortmund.

He had been training with Sunderland since preseason.
