ChampionshipDoncaster Rovers have failed to make any progress in their bid to land Shay Given on loan from Aston Villa, reports The Evening Herald. Doncaster made an inquiry about taking Given on a season-long loan deal but it's thought that Given is holding out to get a Premier League club and with the Championship season starting next weekend, Doncaster are no closer to agreeing a deal for the veteran.

Doncaster have also dismissed reports of a move for another Irishman unwanted at Villa, midfielder Stephen Ireland.

"People are putting two and two together, possibly with Stephen being a friend of mine, but there's been no approach made for him," said Doncaster boss Paul Dickov.
