Sunderland's club doctor Ishtiaq Rehman has handed in his resignation notice following the Patrick van Aanholt controversy.

Van Aanholt was withdrawn from the Sunderland squad just 15 minutes ahead of their encounter against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane two weeks ago and it was revealed later that the defender was omitted due to concerns from Rehman regarding his heart.

However, van Aanholt has since featured in 90 minutes in back-to-back matches and now according to reports from the Daily Mail, it has been claimed that Rehman is set to resign from his post as club doctor following the fiasco.
