Former Manchester United boss Tommy Docherty feels Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement knowing his squad was on the slide.
David Moyes is planning a major overhaul of last season's champions.
Docherty suggests Ferguson could have made reinforcements and done more to keep two of the club's promising youngsters before he handed over to David Moyes.
The Doc told the Sunday Mirror: "Fergie knew it was time to pick up his bags and go. Everybody could see the squad needed strengthening.
"He could have signed three or four players himself before he went. The team hasn't been good enough this season."
