Disappointing USA falls to Ukraine in Cyprus

The USA national team has been beaten 2-0 by Ukraine in an international friendly with Cyprus in Larnaca.

Goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Marko Devic consigned the US to their heaviest defeat since September last year as Juergen Klinsmann's men World Cup tune-up took a hit.

The opening goal came in the 12th minute when Denys Garmash collected the rebound from his initial effort to set up Yarmolenko to slot home past Tim Howard, who had been able to deny the former, but not the latter.

US striker Jozy Altidore came close to levelling six minutes into the second half but his header missed the target before Alejandro Bedoya was unable to make the most of an error from Andriy Piyatov, seeing his shot go wide.

An improved second half from the US, however, was put to bed when Ukraine substitute Devic struck on his second attempt after Howard had once again allowed the deflection to fall for the attack.

The result, although not disastrous, would not be welcomed by Klinsmann especially seeing as Ukraine are not fellow World Cup qualifiers. The US will now move on to their April clash with arch rivals Mexico in Phoenix as Ukraine look ahead to Euro2016 qualifiers which kick off in September.
