Senegal defender Lamine Diatta is set to sign with Stoke City.

The centre-back made two appearances for Newcastle, but since being released by the Toon last May the 33-year-old has been a free agent.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis has now handed former national captain Diatta a trial starting today. The powerful six-footer has won 40 caps, and played for Lyon, St Etienne, Toulouse, Rennes and Turkish side Besiktas before joining Newcastle last March.

He would become the fourth Senegalese player at the Britannia Stadium, joining Salif Diao, Abdoulaye Faye and Ibrahima Sonko.
