Di Matteo has ambitions above simply survival for West Brom

West Bromwich Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo was a happy man after his side's convincing 3-1 win over Newcastle at the Hawthorns. Peter Odemwingie struck a second-half double after Somen Tchoyi had given the Baggies the lead before the break.

"I thought we played very well. I thought everything about today was good," Di Matteo told Sky Sports 1.

"We scored three great goals and we controlled the game for the majority of the time.

"I think we pressed them quite high up the pitch, we never let them settle in. We recovered possession quite well.

"I thought the first goal was excellent goal. The second goal came from pressing them and the third as well."

After moving into the top half of the table Di Matteo denied his side were only hoping to avoid relegation back to the npower Championship.

"No absolutely not. We are trying to learn to be in the Barclays Premier League," he added.

"We need to keep it going game by game. We have a great game against Aston Villa next week, which hopefully we can go into with a lot of confidence."

Odemwingie was happy to help secure back-to-back wins and put last month's a poor run of form , when West Brom went winless for five games, behind them.

"We had a series of bad game but the last two games we have got six points," he said. "We are very happy. Especially as we have won 3-1."

The Nigeria international was also content to get back on the scoresheet for the first time after returning from injury.

"There was instruction from the coaches that I stay high with the defenders, because I was all over the place in the first half," he added.

"So I did that - it's good sometimes to listen."
