Di Canio: I asked players to give more of themselves to Sunderland

Paolo di Canio is demanding his Sunderland players give more of themselves for the club.

Di Canio has been delighted by the attitude of his players since taking charge.

Di Canio told talkSPORT: "I have to be honest. Individually I found a fantastic group of fellows so it wasn't difficult [to get them performing].

"In some ways it was easy for me because my way to manage is clear. I was strict and straight in terms of the rules and they accepted this.

"You can be the best manager in the world but if you don't have that belief from your players you're going to fail in your mission.

"It's easy sometimes to talk to them. We have to remember that they are top and important footballers, in terms of quality, but they're still human.

"I went to them and was clear. I said they were crucial. I've shown them and coached them a sense of responsibility. [I've told them to] work hard and lead by example. They should try and sacrifice a bit of their life [for the club]."
