Former AC Milan striker Paolo di Canio has jumped to the defence of Leonardo.

Di Canio insists Leonardo has inspired Milan beyond expectations, despite claims the Rossoneri have underachieved this season.

West Ham United legend Di Canio argues: "Milan has done well, with Leonardo they went beyond all expectations.

"Leo was able to motivate the team and has improved young players like Antonini and Abate, gave confidence to Borriello and Ronaldinho."

However, Di Canio says dropping points against the likes of Catania and Livorno have cost Milan any chance of the Scudetto.

"When you lose points and cannot kill off teams, then you struggle to win the Scudetto.

"We need reinforcements from big names, otherwise the gap with Inter is unlikely to be bridged."
