West Ham United legend Paolo di Canio cannot guarantee staying in charge of Swindon Town despite guiding them into League One.

For several weeks Di Canio has been stalling chairman Jeremy Wray over new contract talks.

And after promotion on Saturday the Robins' Italian manager revealed he almost left the club.

Di Canio said: "A month ago I nearly resigned. I have to tell people now that we are up. I didn't do this because I promised fans we would go up."

Di Canio is in emotional turmoil after his mother passed away a fortnight ago.
