Designated Player slots will help the league - DC United owner Chang

DC United owner William Chang believes the newly introduced Designated Player slots will have a major benefit for MLS.

In an interview with the Washington Post's Insider, Chang was all for the expanded DP slot rulings saying it is a more rewarding strategy for the clubs.

"It helps. The intent of the league was to not penalize the teams and the ownership groups for going the extra distance. The old rules, with the number over $400,000 toward the cap, it was not rewarding. By lowering the number, it made the threshold easier," Chang said.

As for DC's plans with the new rules, Chang said it definitely gives them more options to find quality players.

"We are looking at a number of players who might qualify as a DP. Given the transfer window closing soon [April 15], more likely it would be in the summer window. I hate to put probabilities on something like this, but there are a number of players on our radar screen," he added.
