Designated Player not essential for Montreal Impact - Arnaud

Montreal Impact captain Davy Arnaud believes a Designated Player is not essential for a MLS franchise.

The Canadian club are one of eight of the 19 teams in North America's top flight that does not have a DP on their roster and Arnaud says it is not a definite requirement for the Impact to be successful.

"It depends," Arnaud told the Montreal Gazette. "If it's the right guy, it's important. But I think historically we've seen teams in this league be successful without them.

"I think if you get the right guy in the right situation, then obviously it can help. Do I think a designated player is essential to having a good team? No, I don't."

And head coach Jesse Marsch added that the decision on who does become a club's marquee player is one that cannot be taken lightly.

"It's flexibility (the league) built in so teams can have and use them in the right way," he said. "You don't just get a DP because you think you want to get a DP, but you do it in a way that helps your team, helps your organization.

"You have to be careful how you approach it."
