Preston boss Phil Brown warned his side they need to start winning games if they are to avoid relegation from the Championship. North End slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to local rivals Burnley leaving them rock bottom of the league.

The hosts took the lead but were undone by a late winner from the Clarets.

Brown said: "I've got a lot of disappointed people I've got to pick up over the weekend now.

"I've got my staff getting involved with opposition staff on a weekly basis. Maybe if the players showed enough fight where that was concerned we might win a game.

"There's one or two prepared to die for the cause and that is what I need on the field as opposed to off it. I haven't got an impossible task but it is arresting the losing mentality."

Brown was less than impressed with his side's defending, particularly for the equaliser.

"I need them to understand why we are conceding goals," he added. "The first goal is a nonsense in terms of our defending - we were comfortable up till then. It is basic, fundamental defending we have to get right.

"Bragging rights go to Burnley this week and I can't stand the sight of 5,550 supporters enjoying themselves at Deepdale.

"We forgot to play when we got the ball, but we didn't hold the ball up when we got it up front. I need better quality in both final thirds. "We've got 13 games to try and put that right."

The win left Burnley four points off the play-offs with two games in hand.

Boss Eddie Howe said: "It has been a good start. I'm absolutely delighted with the players.

"This was always going to be a tough game, it was never going to be a pretty football match, but we did the nasty bits right.

"It was a really professional performance and I thought the two centre-halves were fantastic for us.

"We showed really good character to come from behind and it's another performance that really pleases me. The second goal was a really good move, a fantastic ball from Wade Elliot and Jack Cork attacked it where boots were flying.

"So really pleased for him to score because he has been a consistent performer for us week-in, week-out.

"Jay Rodriguez had a lot of time for the first goal, but he didn't panic and put it away well.

"I thought we were the better side in the first half and second half we came under a bit of pressure but defended really well and you always felt we had a chance if we could just string some passes together. And when we do that we look like a really good side."
