Derby boss Nigel Clough is chasing Portsmouth striker Tommy Smith.

The Mirror says Clough will ask Pompey's administrator if he can sign Smith to help his Championship survival battle.

But his hopes were hit when the former Ram notched his first goal for his new club. However Derby, who are slipping back into trouble, hope their cash is good enough to tempt Pompey's money men to do business.

Smith has been on the fringes at Portsmouth since he signed from Watford but he scored on a rare appearance, against Hull, to complicate matters.
