Derby boss Davies determined to be competitive

Derby County boss Billy Davies is determined that they compete in next season's Premiership.

"We are not going to the Premiership for a sight-seeing tour," he said. "We are not going in there to be one-season wonders, we are going in to continue the development of this club and hopefully go from strength to strength.

"Trying to stay in the Premiership is a great challenge but we won't go there to admire the other clubs, teams and stadiums.

"We have to compete and show we are ready for the step up."

Davies points to Reading and Wigan Athletic as examples to follow.

Reading surprised everybody by finishing eighth in their first season in the Premiership, while Wigan are preparing for their third consecutive season in the top flight.

"Reading and Wigan do give promoted teams heart because they have shown what can be achieved," added Davies. "They have proved that promoted teams can go into the Premier League and mix and match it."
