Derby County have made a late move for Oldham Athletic centre-half Neal Trotman.

Rams boss Paul Jewell matched Preston's £600,000 offer for the 20-year-old. Trotman was due to join Alan Irvine's Preston before Derby came in.

Jewell knows some of his current defenders are not good enough to mount a promotion challenge back to the Premier League next season.
